Examination Stages
Overview
The ARAE examination is arranged over three stages, each designed to assess a specific set of competences required for Registration as an Architect in Ireland.
Candidates must demonstrate both practical experience and theoretical knowledge across key areas of architectural practice.
Stage 1
Verification of Experience
Description
Candidates must submit evidence of at least seven years of relevant architectural experience.
Requirements
Detailed documentation demonstrating seven years of practical experience, at, or equivalent to, the level of an architect.
Process
Submit a portfolio of experience, using standard templates provided by ARAE.
Outcome
Successful candidates will receive confirmation of their experience.
Stage 2
Assessment of Design Competence
Description
Candidates are assessed on design knowledge and skills through written exams and a design project.
Written Papers
Two exams in each of four subjects:
- Critical Analysis
- Structure & Technology
- Environment & Performance
- History & Culture
Design Project
Develop and communicate a design proposal over five consecutive days.
Stage 3
Assessment of Practice Competence
Description
Candidates must demonstrate applied knowledge in practice management, legislation, and contracts through written and oral examinations.
Written Papers
Two exams in each of four subjects:
- Architectural Practice
- Construction Legislation
- Procurement & Contracts
- Construction Scenarios
Oral Examinations
Two oral assessments focusing on professional judgement, communication, and practical experience.
